Emily creates insect displays, too. At the age of 12, Emily began working with butterflies & moths to create works of art. She is fascinated by the intricate patterns & mind-boggling behaviors of insects. Emily taught herself how to prepare & display insects that she found in her backyard in upstate New York. Then, she moved on to purchasing ethically-sourced, legally imported moths & butterflies to enjoy their fabulous array of patterns & colors. Their wings hold tiny scales that reflect different colors of light, and their bodies are encased in an exoskeleton that is easily preserved. Emily enjoys learning about their biology, too. She spent last summer rearing some polyphemus from egg to caterpillar to moth (in the picture below), and she preserved them after they passed naturally. You see, most moths & butterflies have short lifespans, between 3 to 14 days. Currently, Emily is learning how to display beetles, cicadas, and crickets. She finds pleasure in preserving the beauty of these unique & visually stunning specimens. Emily has exhibited her cloches and frames at county fairs and at the New York State Fair.. She especially likes the cloches because they have so much room to play around with and the specimens look very lifelike. At age 14, Emily is excited to have an opportunity to sell some of her creations. She hopes that you will also enjoy these stunning displays in your home! |
